Adult Ceramics Class

Over the period of eight weeks, instructor Casey Thomas will lead the class in an exploration of a variety of techniques for the production of clay vessels and kiln firing. Students will be introduced to the wheel and have the opportunity to explore its possibilities. An emphasis on form, function, and personal aesthetic will be a focus of the course as students partake in the physical process of wheel-thrown pottery. Advanced students are given guidance as they pursue their own direction of interest. As clay work is completed, we will explore ways of firing it. Firing techniques include low-fire and high-fire electric with functional and nonfunctional glazes and underglazes. The class will also include one Raku workshop.(Additional Raku workshops are available continuously, for additional charges.) Instructor: Casey Thomas.

Paper Punch — Magnificent Magnolias

Spring TableScape

You have heard of landscapes, and now there are TableScapes. You’ll learn how to create the perfect table, with just the right arrangement and accessories, in traditional and art deco style. You will also make a centerpiece to match your home décor and impress your guests. Each person’s home is different, so therefore each TableScape will be different too. Students should bring a favorite container to fill. Completion of the Basic Flower Arraigning class is strongly recommended. Bring your own cutting tool. Instructor Rita Majka, florist.

Paralegal Certificate Course

This intensive, nationally acclaimed program is designed for beginning as well as advanced legal workers. Students will be trained to interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law, prepare legal documents, and assist in preparing cases for courtroom litigation. The practice-oriented instruction relates to the areas of law in which paralegals are most in demand. There are no prerequisites to take the course, but students will be expected to complete a significant amount of homework for each session. This program will help students increase their office’s efficiency, productivity, and billable hours, as well as learn new marketable job skills. Internship assistance is also available to the
top students in each course.

Investing Safely—Sleeping Soundly

This course is for those who want to invest money while minimizing the risk. You’ll
learn how to invest your money to reach long-term financial goals, such as paying for your children’s college or your retirement, while reducing the effect of stock market fluctuations. You’ll learn investing basics, such as how a mutual fund or Exchange Traded Fund works, and how to use tax deferred plans such as 401(k) or IRAs. We’ll also show you how to decide between stocks, bonds and money market investments, how to evaluate performance, and how to use low-cost index funds to carry out your investment plan. Hand Drumming for Beginners

Close-Up Magic for the Nonmagician

Magic can be a valuable asset in social situations and in business, teaching and public speaking. The goal of this class is to enable

Niagara Scuba Center teaches a full range of scuba courses which include entry-level open water certification, advanced, rescue diving, divemaster, assistant instructor and beyond. Students supply their own mask, fins and snorkel. All instructors are fully

How to Write Stories that Kids Will Love

This is a course for adults who want to write for children in pre-K through grade 3. Topics will include: “What’s a Story Anyway?”, “Who’s the Hero Here?”, “Easing into Easy-to-Reads,”"When It’s Time to Turn  to Rhyme,” “Picturing a Picture Book,” and “To Market, to Market – Finding the Right Publisher for Your Work.” Participants will have opportunities to share their own work and to solicit suggestions from others in the class. Have a Problem? Bananas, Balloons, Rocks, and MIT Can Help You Solve It

Is your goal to lose weight? Quit smoking? Exercise more? Get organized? Spend more time with family? Year after year, we make resolutions that get broken; try fads that don’t work;
berate ourselves for being undisciplined, weak, or not motivated enough; and still our problems don’t go away. This class will provide participants with a theory-based model for individual problem solving based on Kurt Lewin’s theories of change and force-field analysis. You’ll look deeply at a persistent problem in your own life . . . and find new ways to solve it. Based on workshops developed by MIT and Harvard faculty. Vinyasa Yoga Level I

This eight-week beginning class is perfect for you if you have little to no experience with yoga or prefer a slower pace. You will learn about the Vinyasa style of Hatha Yoga. “Vinyasa” means one breath per movement. Emphasis is on alignment, breathing, building strength, and balance. You will finish each class with deep stretching and relaxation/meditation. Introduction to yogic philosophy included. It is recommended that students attend the Yoga for Absolute Beginners class to learn the very basics of poses and breathing before attending this class; however, it is not a requirement. Vinyasa Yoga Level II

Continue your yoga journey from the fall session of the Vinyasa flow class. We will build on the asanas already learned and move to integrate more complex poses. This is an energetic eight-week class during which you’ll move with one breath per movement, flowing from posture to posture. We will build endurance and strength as well as flexibility and concentration. Students should have a basic knowledge of yoga asanas including Sun Salutations, etc. This is not a beginner’s class. So You Want to Be a Better CLOWN! Clowning Made Simple ~ Part II This class is designed as a continuation of Clowning Made Simple, Part I, or for clowns who would like to expand their knowledge and skills. In this class we will continue with balloon animals, magic tricks and juggling. In addition, puppetry, storytelling, skits and performing at birthday parties will be presented. Students continue to learn skills enabling them to become great clowns. At the end of this five-week session, all clowns will participate in a graduation ceremony, enabling them to show off their skills. Instructor: Rainbow the Clown. Colonial Hearth Cooking at NU and Old Fort Niagara Back by popular demand — all new recipes! In this time period, we try to cook meals in 15 minutes, but what was it like in past times without microwaves? A culinary encounter with early America, this adult course will allow participants to learn about 18th century foods, cooking and table manners. Class members will produce a meal for themselves at Old Fort Niagara using the original hearth, cooking techniques, recipes and equipment. A tour of the fort is included. This class is perfect for people who are curious about food history, and who want to try old recipes and experience a different taste! Winter Wine Day Wine Day is an educational and fun program that provides all the information you need about wine, wine appreciation and the great winemaking area of Niagara County. During four morning sessions, you’ll learn about a variety of wine-related topics. In the afternoon (or any time at your leisure), you are encouraged to put this knowledge to use at the wineries on the Niagara Wine Trail. (Visits to the wineries are on your own and at your convenience.) Anyone who has an interest in wine should plan to attend! Date: Saturday, Feb. 28

Defensive Driving Course Offers 10% discount on auto insurance Niagara University offers defensive driving courses in association with the New York Safety Program. Completing the course entitles you to a 10 percent discount on your automobile insurance premiums in New York state. The Department of Motor Vehicles will also deduct up to four points from your driving record if points were assigned in the last 18 months. Certain restrictions apply to the point reduction privilege.Instructors: NYSP certified teachers.

We’ll discuss how a metal detector works, the laws and protocols governing the pursuit and retrieval of coins and relics, how to find locations, what basic necessities should be considered, and the plants and insects that can make for an uncomfortable experience. Tall Ship Dinner Cruise on Lake Ontario Take part in this fun-filled, dinner-dance cruise on Lake Ontario from dusk to midnight, with
entertainment by the blues group The Midnight Shift. (Dress casually and bring a sweater or jacket.) Cash bar available. Passengers must be 19 years of age or over. The ship leaves Port Dalhousie (East Pier) at 8 p.m. (boarding begins at 7:30 p.m.).

Tall Ship Cruise Through History Join us for a leisurely six-hour historical cruise on the waters of western Lake Ontario and the lower Niagara River. Relive the historic episodes leading up to, during and following The War of 1812, marvel at the natural history of the Niagara River, and quietly glide over the final resting sites of some of Lake Ontario’s sunken ships from the past two centuries. The cruise will embark from Port Dalhousie (East Pier) at 10:30 a.m. (boarding time 10 a.m.) and will include a daylong educational commentary by noted Niagara historian, professor Wesley Turner. The distance covered throughout the trip is directly dependent upon current, wind, and weather conditions and is at the sole discretion of the captain of the ship.Cash bar is available to individuals 19 years of age and over. Tall Ship — Welland Canal Sunday Lunch Cruise Here’s a totally unique opportunity — a daylong cruise aboard the tall ship Empire Sandy to explore some of the locks, bridges, and history of the St. Lawrence Seaway’s Welland Canal. You’ll experience, first-hand, the actual raising and lowering process for ships within the canal system by traveling back and forth through the first two locks of the canal. With an educational commentary throughout the trip by noted Niagara historian professor Wesley Turner, you’ll travel a component of the very same route which international lakers and liners travel between the Great Lakes Erie and Ontario. The ship will then hoist the sails for a fun sail on Lake Ontario before returning to the dock at Port Dalhousie (East Pier). The distance

Fondant and Tiered Cakes: Wilton Course III In this session, you will learn step by step how to create impressive designs like cornelli lace (distinctive string work that covers the cake sides), and beautiful ruffle borders. Also, learn how to make the fondant rose. Fondant and Gum Paste Learn the best way to use fondant and gum paste in four fun lessons! You will cover a cake and base board with fondant to help create the perfect surface to show off your decorations. Learn how to color, cut and tint fondant gum paste. Learn beautiful effects such as punched strips and appliques. You will also craft an array of incredible blossoms, including a multi-layer fantasy flower. This class includes: tinting fondant; marbleizing fondant; covering a cake board with fondant; covering a cake with fondant; draping; handkerchief overlay; ribbon garland and border; daisy; carnation; fantasy flower; favor box; fondant cut-outs; and fondant borders. Basic EMT Original This course introduces the student to basic life-support knowledge, skills and concepts as
recognized by the New York State Department of Health. Upon successful completion of the course and a state practical skills examination, the student will be allowed to sit for the NYSDOH written certification examination. Course content includes the legal aspects of emergency care, medical and trauma assessment, blood-borne pathogens and universal precautions, airway management and adjunct usage pharmacology and emergency medication administration, CPR and Automatic External Defibrillation, hemorrhage control, spinal immobilization, fracture management, hazardous materials awareness, childbirth, weapons of mass destruction awareness, and environmental and medical emergencies. Students successfully completing the course will be issued certificates by Niagara University and the American Heart Association for their CPR and AED certification cards.

Basic EMT-D Refresher/Challenge This training program is designed to be adaptable to the needs of the recertifying basic EMT- D whose certification has not expired and the basic EMT whose certification has lapsed. Each student is required to complete a challenge exam, after which the student’s performance is reviewed and an individual needs program is developed. Upon successful completion of the course and a state practical skills examination, the student will be allowed to sit for the NYSDOH written certification examination. This course challenges as well as prepares the basic EMT to recertify. It presents a general overview of the Basic EMT Original curriculum while bringing the student up-to-date with recent NYS standards and protocols. Dates: Tuesdays & Thursdays beginning Jan. 8

International Trauma Life Support ITLS, formally BTLS, is accepted internationally as the standard training course for prehospital trauma care. It’s used as a state-of-the-art continuing education course and as an essential curriculum in many paramedic, EMT, and first-responder training programs. ITLS courses combine classroom learning and hands-on skill stations and scenario assessment stations. Each ITLS course includes a comprehensive manual sent to you in advance.ITLS empowers EMS personnel with the knowledge and skills to provide optimal care for the injured in the prehospital setting.
