Biology
Consultant: Anthony Bertino
Anthony “Bud” Bertino has taught AP Biology for 26 years of his 41-year teaching career. He has been an exam question Reader for eight years. He is presently a clinical supervisor for the University @ Albany, a presenter for Ward’s Nature Science Establishment, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and has worked as a consultant for the College Board presenting AP one-day and week-long workshops for the last 10 years. This session will be assisted by Patricia Nolan Bertino. Bud and his wife Patricia have just completed a high school level forensics textbook (Forensic Science: Fundamentals and Investigations) published by Cengage. Bud and Patricia teach forensics to high school teachers in summer workshops in the Albany area.

AP Biology coursework will focus on the required labs, testing, how to organize your lessons and your time. Many resources will be provided including textbooks and a CD-ROM containing additional lab and lecture materials.

All 12 required labs will be discussed, including short cuts, and the difficult 9 will be performed.
Calculus AB
Consultant: Dorethea Smith
Dorothea (Dee) Smith taught mathematics on the secondary level for 34 years before retiring from the Binghamton City School District in June of 2007. She taught AP Calculus-AB level for the last 20 of those years. Currently, she is working as an adjunct instructor in math at Broome Community College. Dee received some extra insight into the requirements of the AP exam when she served as a reader for grading the tests during six different scoring sessions, the most recent in June of 2007. Dee was also involved in developing an Applied Mathematics program for her high school. She is a graduate of Lemoyne College and Binghamton University.

Calculus AB will stress the four strands which must be included in AP Calculus- analytical, numerical, geometric and verbal. The most recent exam will be discussed at length. Emphasis will be placed on the scoring rubrics for free response questions. The new TI Nspire will be introduced at this workshop, although the TI 84 or TI 89 will be the tools used most often for problem solving

English Literature and Composition
Consultant: Joann Ellis Hamm
A high school English teacher of 46 years, Joann Ellis Hamm has taught A.P. Literature for the past 26 years in Webster, N.Y. Before coming to Webster she taught in Pittsford, N.Y., Los Angeles, Campbell, CA, and Rochester, N.Y. She has served as a College Board consultant for 7 years presenting workshops to new and experienced teachers. Also, Joann has served as a Reader since 1993 and has been a Table Leader for the last 6 years. She is currently a nominee for the A.P. English Literature Test Development Committee. Her life outside the classroom has her coaching speech and debate, directing the district play, and coaching the morning show anchors. Personal joys are reading, traveling, theater, and good conversation with family and friends.

European History
Consultant: Margaret Krizan
Margaret Krizan has been an AP European instructor and reader for seven years. She has also been an instructor of World History and a reader for AP World for two years. In addition, she is a consultant in AP European, AP World and the Building Success program for The College Board. She has been teaching for 16 years at the high school level in Social Studies.
Statistics
Consultant: Jim Bohan
Jim Bohan is the Assessment Specialist at Intermediate Unit #13 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He is the former K-12 Mathematics Program Coordinator at Manheim Township School District in Lancaster, PA. He is a veteran of 37 years teaching in parochial, private and public high schools. In addition, he has been an adjunct instructor of mathematics and Statistics at several colleges and universities in Illinois and his present home of Pennsylvania. Jim is a consultant to the College Board for AP Calculus and AP Statistics. He has been an officer of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics and a member of two major committees for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. In addition, he has been a member of the AP Statistics Test Development Committee for ETS. He has published his syllabus in the AP Statistics Teachers' Guide and has published an AP Statistics Review through Amsco School Publishing. Jim has earned a Master of Arts in Mathematics from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois and completed a Master of Science in Applied Statistics at Villanova University in Philadelphia, PA. He has recently completed a doctoral program in Educational Leadership from Immaculata University, PA.
US History
Consultant: Scott Shiffner
Scott Shiffner (BA Cornell University, MAT Harvard University) taught AP US History for 29 years during his 32 year career at Orchard Park (NY) High School. During that time course enrollment more than doubled to its present four sections. He has been a Reader for the AP US History Exam five times and a College Board endorsed consultant in AP US History since 2004. Participants in the AP US History Summer Institute can anticipate a worthwhile experience for newcomers to the course and experienced teachers alike—addressing course content, exam preparation and evaluation, recent trends in the field, effective classroom practices, and identification of useful print and electronic resources.
