Folk Arts Program
The Museum's Folk Arts Program is committed to the discovery,
documentation, and presentation of traditional arts in Western New York.
Our exhibitions, publications, artist demonstrations, workshops, archive,
and other activities increase understanding of the arts and cultures of
Western New York's diverse peoples--and help to preserve our region's
folk heritage for future generations.
Since 1987, a series of special projects funded through the Folk Arts
Program of the New York State Council on the Arts have enabled the Museum
to collaborate with a number of local ethnic and minority communities
in preserving and presenting their traditional arts.
Working closely with community consultants, the Folk Arts program locates
and documents folk artists often unknown outside of their own family and
friends. Ongoing documentation forms the basis for exhibitions, publications,
artist demonstrations, and performances that bring folk arts to a wider
audience. The Museum is also developing a permanent archive of folk arts
documentation as a resource for teachers and scholars. Folk Arts became
a permanent museum program in the fall of 1991.
