I thought that all
the earlier artists, including Sangster, had fabricated the look of
the river according to ancient rules of composition and what they thought
was "beautiful." I thought they had invented those delightful
clumps of trees hanging over the river banks, for example. . . I found
to my surprise that nature had provided the models. . . I realized I
didn't have to contrive the 19th century look - it was lurking everywhere.
