Letter From the Director
Spring / Summer 2005
Ah springtime! Our newsletter turns aqua blue this time, in anticipation of the bright skies and lake activities of summer. Kicking off the season will be the unique sculptural creations of Wendell Castle, an artist recognized throughout the region and beyond. Twelve of his recent works will be on view, all harking back to forms in nature and always crafted from a love of wood. The CAM Folk Arts Program is issuing a call for works through local beadworkers from the Tuscarora Nation and Iroquois cultural organizations on both sides of the US/Canadian border for an exhibition of raised beadwork collars planned for this summer. Speaking of summer, our satellite gallery will feature prints of Niagara Falls for the tourist crowd, thanks to a newly acquired collection donated by J. Warren Perry of Buffalo. Have you been to the Castellani Art Museum at the Falls yet? Have a look, and while you are there, take a tour of the newly refurbished Conference Center that houses the gallery. Another rooftop party is in the works! Last summer, seventy-five artists came to the barbeque with small (12'' x 12'') donated works for the October gala. Invitations will go out very soon. Speaking of the annual gala, the committee will begin its work shortly. If you would like to be a part of the planning for this important event, please call 286-8287. We will need help with baskets, with artwork, and with the event itself. We also have other volunteer opportunities at the reception desk, at the shop and café, at the new satellite gallery, and within our docent (tour guides) corps. Finally, an annual appeal letter will go out in the late spring. This is our first such appeal, and we hope you will respond with whatever you can give. The proceeds will benefit the museum in so many areas: educational programs, exhibition planning and installations, and general operations. Thanks for listening,
Laurene Buckley, Ph.D., Director
