Spring / Summer 2004
GREETINGS! |

Our third newsletter in this new format celebrates a jam-packed schedule for spring and summer of 2004. The biggest news, however, is the opening in mid-May of a satellite gallery in downtown Niagara Falls. Located at one end of the new Conference Center Niagara Falls (on Third Street), the gallery will feature shows of the best artists from our Top Spin series, among others. As Chris Schoepflin, Senior Project Manager for the project, states: “It is our belief that your presence within the facility will be extremely positive for both our organizations – in your case, the increased visibility, marketing and promotion of your museum and, in our case, gaining a valuable amenity that enhances the experience of our conference visitors.” Watch for announcements of the grand opening and regular Castellani exhibitions at the site.
In keeping with our tradition of developing summer exhibitions that appeal to tourists, we are proud to display Patrick Robideau’s latest installation piece, a “faux” Niagara waterfall that actually flows over used, “carved out ”trunks and takes up most of the rear back wall of the central gallery. An adjacent wall will display the best historical Niagara prints from a collection recently donated by Dr. Warren Perry of Buffalo. Finally, we celebrate Canada’s Independence Day on July 1 with an opening reception for a native son, Eric Starke, whose travels around the globe have helped him see and record firsthand the “rapid slide of unique cultures into homogeneity.” Our Saturday Art Express workshops for families wind down in May and June, with a special series of children’s stories, read by Niagara University theatre personnel, and related to works in the permanent collection, such as a Dr. Seuss story with Judy Pfaff’s WASCO, or Mirette on the High Wire with Alexander Calder’s mobile. We then take a short break before our new summer arts camp begins. Thanks to the proceeds from the fall gala, the camp will be an extravaganza of outside “guests” from other cultural groups, hands-on art activities galore, and afternoon theatre fun with the Niagara University Repertory Theatre students. Please join us for a potpourri of exhibitions, programs, and events coming up – including one last First Friday for the season on May 7!
