CAM’s Carborundum Corporation Collection
February 2 - April 8, 2007
The Castellani houses a substantial number of works commissioned during the 1960s and ’70s by the Carborundum Corporation, formerly a Niagara Falls firm now owned by the Saint-Gobain Corporation of Amherst, New York. In 1960 the company was faced with the challenge of finding a way to reward its top-performing distributors and salespeople. After considering numerous alternatives, the annual winners were given edition pieces of sculpture by some of the leading artists of the time, including Max Bill, Barbara Hepworth, Louise Nevelson, and Joseph Albers. This exhibition will display the museum’s donated examples from that project for the first time.

Christine Walsh: Tangelment
February 2 - April 22, 2007
Opening reception with artist’s talk: First Friday, February 2
Christine Walsh’s work blurs the distinction between craft and fine art, both materially and conceptually. According to the artist, traditionally female crafts, such as sewing, knitting, and crochet are combined in her art with hand-made paper, fabrics, and human hair to represent “everyday ritualistic actions.” Most recently, Walsh explores her feelings of being disconnected from her mother, a reference both to her physical human mother as well as the holistic notion of “mother” earth.

Milton Rogovin:
Native American Series, 1963-2002
March 2 - June 24, 2007
Opening reception with curators’ talk and artist’s book signing (The Making of a Social Documentary Photographer by Melanie Anne Herzog)
First Friday, March 2, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Milton Rogovin’s work has been collected by the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; and the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, Arizona, among others. We are proud to host the very first exhibition of the artist’s important Native American Series, a thirty-nine year project. Rogovin began photographing Iroquois communities in upstate New York and Canada as well as Native families who made their homes on the Lower West Side of Buffalo at a time when they were mainly invisible in mainstream culture. A major goal, with this show, is to create an oral history based on the portraits included. The project’s curatorial team includes Dr. Cynthia Conides, Acting Executive Director of the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society; Allan Jamieson, Director of Neto Hatinakwe Onkwehowe; and Mark Rogovin, who coordinates the Rogovin Collection. Support came from the New York State Council on the Arts. Co-sponsors are the Museum Studies Program at Buffalo State College, Neto Hatinakwe Onkwehowe, and the Rogovin Collection, LLC.

Lesley Dill: A Fine Line
December 1 – April 18, 2007
Opening reception with artist’s tour:
First Friday, December 1, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Lesley Dill, a contemporary artist of international fame, will focus on the use of language and poetry in this recent grouping of sculpture, which utilizes only thin metal wire. There is a dichotomy of both delicacy and strength about the artist’s sculpture that reflects her careful use of texts, especially the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Dill will give a tour of her show at the opening reception, after which she will deliver a lecture at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery— a whirl-wind Western New York tour for this renowned New York City artist!
