The Exquisite Corpse in Glass: Contemporary Flameworkers
Play A Surrealist Game

September 26, 2005 -February 12, 2006

Opening reception
with curator’s talk: First Friday, October 7, 5:00 – 8:00  p.m.

Ten internationally-recognized figurative glass sculptors were invited to “play” a modern version  of the Surrealist game, cadavre exquis (exquisite corpse). In the original game, the players would write words on bits of paper, which would then be drawn at random
to create nonsensical (or amazingly profound) sentences. The first sentence ever created this way gave the game its name: “The exquisite corpse drinks the young wine.” The game can also be played with art, and our exhibition will be the first to see it realized in glass!
Each artist has created two figures in glass, one male and one female, in three parts: head, torso, and legs. The show will travel, and at each venue, the body parts will be reassembled according to a random drawing, thus ensuring a different exhibition every time. Visual and didactic materials will accompany the exhibition, showcasing every complete figure, artist biography, and the flameworking process. The curator of this exhibition is Marshall Hyde, former director of the Museum and Art Galleries, John A. Logan College, Carterville, Illinois, and a glass artist himself. A separate section of the show will showcase the Castellani’s collection of glass, crystal, and Plexi-glas artworks, including artists Josef Albers, Marvin Lipofsky, and Ginny Ruffner, amongothers.

Through October 15, 2005 In conjunction with our second
“filled to capacity” summer arts camp, major works by
Jonathan Borofsky, Dorothy Gillespie, Keith Haring, Kenneth
Noland, and others, still fill our large central gallery. The
campers responded to the art with their own essays,
poems, drawings, and sculptures, which are displayed
next to their related works through October 15. Come
see what creative campers we had this year! Thanks
again to our partners: NU Theatre’s NURT student
group, Old Fort Niagara, Niagara Aquarium, New
York State Parks and NU's  Clowning around Class.

Mini Kites: World on a Thread

October 7, 2005 - January 8, 2006
Opening reception with kite-themed activities:

Sunday, October 9, 2005, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
This family-friendly exhibition explores the
far-flung history of  kites and the ongoing
ingenuity of kite makers around the world.
The kite is a four thousand year old invention
that has served as a scientific tool, a weapon
of war, and as a canvas for artistic expression.
Worldwide, kites can be made from a variety
of materials: a simple leaf, paper and wood,
silk and bamboo, plastic and fiberglass.
“Mini Kites” shows how imagination
transforms these materials into the world’s
tiniest flying machines. This exhibition is
loaned courtesy of the Drachen Foundation, Seattle, Washington, and
is presented in conjunction with the Niagara International Kite Festival.

Edward Bisone: Paintings

October 7, 2005 - January 10, 2006
Opening reception with curator’s talk:

First Friday, November 4

Nationally recognized, Edward Bisone’s abstract
works are a result of multiple layers of mediums.
His imagery grows out of the manipulation of those
mediums—oil, acrylic, crayon—on the surface of his
canvases. The work is sometimes innocent or deliberately
coarse, and, in its process, develops its own consciousness.
“To me, the success of a work depends not only on the
formal elements of art,” says Bisone, “but on how well an
“essence” is conveyed.”
