Apo Torosyan: Bread Series/ Immigration Installation
October 3, 2004 - January 9, 2005
Opening reception Sunday,
October 3, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.;
artist’s talk at 3:00 p.m.
A contemporary artist of
Armenian and Greek heritage,
Apo
Torosyan uses three-dimensional, mixed media
collages
incorporating bread and
found objects to explore
his family history of ethnic persecution and immigration.
The collages are included in
an interactive installation
created from mounds of
soil
embedded
with newspapers
and breads from many different countries. Walking on paths through the piles of earth becomes a metaphor for immigration, and visitors
will be encouraged to use a comment board to share their own family
histories of relocation. A viewing area for Torosyan’s video documentary
Discovering My Father’s Village will also include reading materials focusing
on the themes of dislocation and ethnic identity, and the ongoing threat
of genocide around the globe. |

October 3, 2004 - January 9, 2005

Niagara Frontier’s many
ethnic communities.

include an exhibition booklet,
raft table, interactives, a reading area, and comment board where visitors will be invited to share
their own bread-related
traditions. Also available will be a resource guide for
parents with an annotated
reading list, suggested
websites, and enhancement activities to try at home. A companion demonstration
series featuring master bread makers and community scholars will present both the history and “how-to’s” of traditional Native American, Asian Indian breads. (See calendar for details.)

Flash Back to the 70s
October 1, 2004 – April 3, 2005
Opening reception with curator’s talk: First Friday, October 1, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Artwork from the 1970s makes up a large and vibrant portion of the collections of the Castellani Art Museum. In these works, viewers can experience some of the most significant movements in contemporary art, movements which in some cases were winding to a close in the seventies, and in some cases were just beginning.
Some of the highlights of the Castellani’s seventies work:
•Homage to Picasso, a seventy-three work portfolio, of which the Castellani
owns sixty-nine prints, commemorating the life of Pablo Picasso, containing prints from nearly every important artist working at the time. This portfolio, which is rarely seen in its entirety, is significant not only for the fame of the artists, but for the incredible diversity of the printmaking techniques the various artists use.
-
Major paintings from Color Field, Op-Art, Photorealist and Hard-Edge artists such as Alvin Loving, Friedel Dzubas, Richard Anuszkiewicz, and Malcolm Morley.
-
Remarkable wall constructions from Robert Rauschenberg and Louise Nevelson.
-
A photography collection containing compelling work from Danny Lyon, Nan Goldin, John Pfahl, Lee Friedlander, and others.
-
Fascinating and rare early works from Cindy Sherman.
- A diverse group of works on paper, including collages from Robert Motherwell and Tom Wesselmann and drawings from Joel Shapiro and Paul Sharits.
