"George Barker was the most famous Niagara photographer, winner of eleven international awards, well-liked and successful at Niagara. In addition to picture-making, this internationally respected photographer, owner of Barker's Stereoscopic View Manufactory and Photograph Rooms, needed, like most other Niagara photographers, to operate a variety store to make ends meet, selling curios and souvenirs-and photographs, too." (Bannon, p.18) Barker lived in the area and so was able to capture the Falls at all times of the year.

Captain Webb was an English Channel swimmer who lost his life trying to swim the rapids on July 24, 1883. It is interesting to note how quickly after the event this and the following illustrations appeared in London newspapers.

Prints by Amos W. Sangster. In Niagara River and Falls From Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. A Series Of One Hundred and Fifty-three Original Etchings Etched On Copper By Amos W. Sangster From His Own Drawings. Buffalo: Tho. T. Fryer, 1886. A portfolio of 50 folio and 103 vignette etchings by A.W. Sangster and with text by James W. Ward. In the original "sections" or parts, with green covers. The plates were printed by J.H. Daniels of Boston in black, brown, sepia or blue ink. All prints are signed or initialed in the plate by Sangster, and the folio prints have pencil signatures. Adamson2: 208; Dow: 921; Seibel1: 78.

The titles given in the list below come from the indexes to the two intended volumes, the plates themselves not having titles. There are some differences between the indexes for the two volumes and those for the separate sections; the former have been used to compile the listing above as these are a corrected version of the latter. The order of prints used for the listing above is the order in which the prints were issued in the parts. The roman numerals listed are etched in the images themselves.

A complete example of Sangster's portfolio of etchings of Niagara Falls and River, as originally issued in 10 sections with green covers. Supposedly 1000 copies of the portfolio were to be printed, but it appears that far fewer were actually published. Sangster spent three years making his portfolio, which is one of the grandest art publishing ventures undertaken in America.

A trade card shaped like an artist's palette, upon which is printed a view of Niagara Falls from Prospect Point. On the verso of this image is the following text, "The Niagara River. Can't be swept back with a broom, neither can you expect to get `as good a wash' with an imitation as you do with the genuine DINGMAN SOAP. REMEMBER, These imitations are Made to Sell, while Dingman's is Made to Wash. These imitations of Dingman's Soap are Quack Soaps, made by Quack Manufacturers. YOU WOULD NOT Employ a Quack Doctor? This print shows a Canada Southern train stopped at Falls View. The image does not show Street's Pagoda, which was standing until 1886. This is a similar image to the Michigan Central chromolithograph [701] but with an earlier train.
