407ad. "by one of the first artists in America" "Falls of Niagara." New York: W.J. Demorest, 1872. 12 x 10. Chromolithograph. With original frame and advertising label. Glued to original backing.

"A Magnificent Prize! Surpassing All Other Offers.. Each Subscriber To Demorest's Monthly Magazine, at Three Dollars a year, will be presented with a premium of Two Elegant Chromos, companion pictures of the two most desirable and popular subjects in America-the Falls of Niagara and Yosemite Falls." So is described the offer from W. Jennings Demorest to his subscribers in 1872. The original chromolithographs ("the best pictures ever published for Ten Dollars, and are veritable gems, worthy of being enshrined in an honored place in our homes") were sent to each subscriber who paid the $3.08 shipping cost. Though probably sent out in the thousands, this is quite a rare image not recorded in any of the Niagara print lists.

The work will be completed in Forty-eight Parts..." In 1874, once all the parts were published, subscribers were encouraged to have them bound into two volumes. The book was also issued directly for sale in that form.

426. [Niagara Falls.] [Buffalo: Richmond Lith. Co.] Ca. 1873. 14 1/4 x 23 3/8. Chromolithograph.

An updated version of the White & Brayley print above [405]. Newly drawn on stone, but an almost exact copy of that print. The only obvious difference is the addition of new buildings to the bottom of the incline railroad. The existence of the Terrapin Tower in the image indicates this print was issued before that structure was demolished in 1873. Another example of this print has an imprint from "The Richmond Lith. Co. Buffalo N.Y.", so this was probably printed by that firm.

427. Frederic Legrip. "Chute du Niagara." Vignette inset on "Amerique Septentrionale." "Dressee" by Desbuissons Geographe; "Revue" by A.T. Chartier. From J. Migeon's Geographie Universelle. Paris: J. Migeon, 1874. Inset engraved by Schoeder; map engraved by L.A. Sengteller; letters engraved by Isid Dalmont. Map with hand color.

This guidebook includes views printed by Nelson & Sons. These are the same type of views as those which were issued in the guidebooks published by Nelson, though in this guide they are trimmed to the image and mounted on stiff paper. None of the prints have attributions to an artist or photograph, but the text states that they are based either on photographs or on images by Washington Friend. Many of the prints have the same images as the prints in the 1868 editions of the Nelson guidebooks [378-388, 389-400], with a few changes made to up-date the scenes, for instance the deletion from the views of Terrapin Tower, which was demolished in 1873.

These prints are from a work similar to Picturesque America but without any steel engravings. In comment on this, Williams remarks: "For over a year some of the most celebrated arists [sic] and wood engravers of the metropolis have been engaged in the preparation of the beautiful engravings that illustrate the text of the volume, and a glance at the result of their labors will show, even to those inexperienced in such matters, that the finest order of wood engraving approaches very closely the more ambitious efforts on steel." (p. 5) The first three images are part of the main chapter on Niagara, and the last view is part of a later chapter entitled "Niagara Falls: Past And Future. A Philosophical Disquisition By Professor Tyndall."
