These prints are essentially the same as those in the 1858 edition [313-324], though this edition lacks the map. There are, however, a few small differences. For all the prints in the 1858 edition, the images have angled corners; in this 1865 edition, the images have square corners. The print entitled [320] "Niagara Suspension Bridge" in the 1858 edition, has the title, "Niagara Cast Iron Bridge," in this edition. "Niagara In Winter From Canada Side" does not include the attribution to W. Friend, which appears on the print from 1858 [324].

An interesting pair of engravings from a French topographical volume.

A certificate used to raise money for a memorial in honor of Union casualties from New York State in the Civil War. The monument, pictured to be a huge obelisk, is shown on the edge of the American Falls. The setting of the monument is inaccurate, no such place existing as shown, but the image of the Falls itself is quite accurate.

A fifth print of Niagara by Bennett. This is a reprint of a plate which was first printed by Bennett himself in 1840. An example of the first edition is located in the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library.

This print shows a figure representing the Democratic Party about to plunge over the brink of the falls, at the last moment grasping a cane--with the head of an African-America--held out to it by Samuel P. Chase. This is an interesting use of Niagara in a political cartoon.

A later edition of the 1865 Nelson souvenir guide [353-364]. The views are the same as those in that edition though with slightly larger margins. This edition may have had twelve prints, with this example missing either a view of "Table Rock," or a title page view that appears in the variant state below. The date comes from a citation in the text.

A variant version of the 1868 edition above. The text is identical but the views in this version are chromolithographs, cited on the cover as, "Oil Coloured Views." These appear to be lithographic transfers from the woodengraved views of the other editions. The views include a green tint that does not appear in other editions. The images of this edition are the same as in earlier editions, though a new title page view is added. The date comes from a citation in the text.

A charming souvenir medallion which when opened reveals an accordion-folded series of round lithographs showing scenes based on photographs by Charles Bierstadt. On one side of the medallion is stamped "Niagara" and on the other is the American crest with shield and eagle.

The process of steel engraving first made its impact with the small, octavo topographical engravings that appeared in such works as Willis' American Scenery and Hinton's History and Topography, both issued in the first half of the nineteenth century. By the second half of the century, some publishers used this medium to produce more elaborate topographical prints, and amongst the best series of this sort was William Pate's American Scenery. This large portfolio contained small folio sized steel engravings by Robert Hinshelwood after the paintings of a number of famous American landscape artists.

A charming illustration of two young ladies sitting just north of Table Rock. The depiction of the falls is somewhat distorted, but this is an interesting use of Niagara as a background for a fashion plate.

A fairly detailed chromolithograph which clearly depicts the spiral staircase on Goat Island and the Incline Railroad at Prospect Point.

A small illustration on the classified pages. Shows two tourists, in rain gear, under the falls, probably in the Cave of The Winds.

This print is very similar to the Crawford & Parsons print above. The composition and content make it clear that one was copied from the other. There are a few changes to the Incline Railroad which indicate that this print was printed later than the Crawford & Parsons print. The Incline Railroad was crushed regularly by falling stones and so changes often were made in its appearance.

An untitled and unattributed print showing the Horseshoe Falls and the top of the Biddle Staircase. One of the three figures in the foreground is drawn quite out of scale. The ante quo date is established by the appearance of the Terrapin Tower.
